Historia de la bandera de Guatemala
La historia de la bandera de Guatemala comenzó cuando América Central obtuvo su independencia de España. El diseño más antiguo data de 1825. Era una tribanda horizontal que presentaba una franja blanca central sin ningún emblema entre dos franjas de color azul oscuro. En 1838 se añadió a la bandera un emblema que pretendía representar a Guatemala, y el emblema se modificó en 1843.
La bandera cambió drásticamente en 1851. La franja central permaneció, pero se reemplazó la mitad de cada franja azul en el lado del asta. La franja superior ganó una sección roja, mientras que la inferior ganó una sección amarilla. La bandera cambió una vez más en 1858, cuando el gobierno adoptó un diseño que presentaba una franja amarilla gruesa en el centro que estaba flanqueada por arriba y por abajo por tres franjas de color azul, blanco y rojo. The conservative government of General Rafael Carrera y Turcios created the first flag. It was based on the proposal of Bishop Juan José de Aycinena y Piñol and other members of the Aycinena Clan. They wanted to emphasize the conservative influence in Guatemala while maintaining Spanish elements.
The white stripe between the two light blue stripes represents that the country is located between the Pacific Ocean to the south and the Caribbean Sea to the northwest.
Blue symbolizes justice, loyalty, gentleness, and strength, the Guatemalan sky, and the two seas mentioned above bathe the coasts of the country, as well as those of Central America.
The liberal design is based on the flag of the United Provinces of Central America, which was based on the Flag of the United Provinces of the Río de la Plata, present-day Argentina.
