Amoeba is a single-celled free-living organism. It is a genus of the Amoebidae family of the Amoebozoa phylum. Amoeba does not have a cell wall. However, there is a nucleus in the protoplasm. Amoeba is an organism that is composed of only one cell. Its other name is Chlorella.
In 1755, German painter and naturalist August Johann Rosell von Rosenhof described the form of the polymorphic sea god Proteus of Greek mythology. Rosell's description of this form of the sea god has many similarities with the species of amoeba Proteus known in the present era.
In 1758, Carl Linnaeus included 'Der Klein Proteus' described by Rosell in his classification system under the name Chaos Chaos.
Later, in 1822, Bory de Saint-Vincent named this organism Amoeba (Amiba). In 1830, German naturalist Christian Gottfried included amoeba in his classification of microscopic organisms; but changed the spelling to Amoeba.
The microscopic animal amoeba moves and searches for food by producing temporary organs called pseudopods. The pseudopods are constantly expanding and contracting, so the shape of the amoeba changes very quickly.
While floating, the amoeba produces many pseudopods together, but when moving on solid ground, only one pseudopod is produced for movement.
Amoeba consumes microscopic organisms and organic matter by phagocytosis and solutes by producing vesicles by pinocytosis. All these food particles are stored in organelles called vacuoles. Although amoeba is a unicellular organism, it performs all its functions with a single cell. That is, it performs biological functions such as excretion, nutrition, growth, stimulation, reproduction, etc., with one cell.
It reproduces by asexual means. One of the asexual processes is the process of binary fission.
