History of Madhya Pradesh:
Much of central India was part of the Gupta Empire from 300-500 AD. The tenth century was a period of confusion. In the early 11th century, Muslims arrived in central India, Mahmud of Ghazni being the first and Mohammed Ghori being the second, who had control over the territory of the Sultanate of Delhi. With the rise of the Marathas, it became part of the Mughal Empire. The Marathas dominated central India until the death of Madhoji Scindia in 1794, but after that independent and small states came into existence. The fragmented small states made it easier for the British to establish their rule. Some of the great women rulers of this region, such as Rani Ahilyabai Holkar of Indore, Rani Kamala Devi of Gond and Rani Durgavati, have made a place for themselves in history.
When India became independent in 1947, Madhya Pradesh was formed from the Central Provinces and Berar of British India. The boundaries kept changing and finally, Chhattisgarh was carved out of Madhya Pradesh.
Population:
The area of this state, known as 'MP', is spread over 3,08,244 sq km, making it the second largest state of India. The capital of Madhya Pradesh is Bhopal. Indore is the largest city here, while Jabalpur is the most important business center of the state. Madhya Pradesh is the sixth largest state of India in terms of population. This state shares its borders with states like Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat and Rajasthan.
