Ultimately, the honor of designing the world's tallest tower was awarded to the world's leading builder of high-rise structures, the Chicago office of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) with Adrian Smith FAIA, RIBA, consulting design partner. The architectural design is distinguished by the abstract triangular imprint of the Hymnocalis flower. The tower consists of three sections arranged around the central core, and the structure is formed in a Y-shape, with setbacks along each of its three wings providing stability to the structure, plus habitable floor plates creating twenty-six helical planes that reduce the cross-section of the tower. The central core merges into the apex of the tower and is crowned by a vertical pole. The Y-shaped design of the ground panels increases the area of ​​the viewing platforms, which overlook the waters of the Arabian Gulf. The onion domes of Burj Khalifa are a reflection of Islamic architecture that can be admired from below or from the air.

Burj Khalifa has undergone more than 40 tests to examine the impact of winds on the tower and its residents. The tests ranged from basic Dubai wind climate tests, structural stress analysis on the façade, and climatic analysis of the impacts on the terraces and around the base of the tower.

The stacking effect or chimney effect is a phenomenon that affects very tall building designs and arises from changes in pressure and temperature. Therefore, special studies were conducted on the Burj Khalifa to determine the size of the changes that should be taken into account in the design of the building.

Interiors feature glass, stainless steel, and dark, polished stone, as well as silver travertine floors, Venetian plaster walls, handmade rugs, and stone floors. The tower's position as a global icon has played an important role in the interiors, which are inspired by local culture.

Artistical works
Burj Khalifa and Mohammed bin Rashid Boulevard are decorated with more than 1,000 pieces of art from prominent artists from the Middle East and the world. Many of these pieces of art were curated by Emaar with the aim of showing the harmony of the universal spirit. Burj Khalifa is one of the global symbols of cooperation, and therefore the art pieces were chosen with the aim of spreading the meanings of communication between cultures and societies.

Major construction events
The exterior cladding of Burj Khalifa began in May 2007 and was completed in September 2009. The massive project involved more than 380 skilled engineers and technicians on site. In the first phase of installation, the team progressed at a rate of about 20 to 30 panels per day, eventually achieving up to 175 panels per day.

In November 2007, the highest amount of base walls in reinforced concrete was pumped using 80 MPa of cement starting from the bottom level with a vertical height of 601 meters, breaking the previous pumping record for the Taipei 101 building, the second tallest tower in the world, which was 470 meters. The previous world record for vertical pumping was 532 meters for the Riva del Garda hydroelectric power station extension in 1994. The cement pressure during pumping at this level was approximately 200 bar.
