Definition of a district in India is an administrative geographical area governed by a District Commissioner, coordinating the offices of District Judges responsible for maintaining law and order and the revenue officers responsible for revenue collection. Usually, officers of the Indian Administrative Service are District Commissioners but sometimes officers of the Assam Administrative Service are also appointed to this post. The District Commissioner is assisted by a large number of various Additional Administrative Officers. An Indian Police Service officer is responsible for maintaining law and order and similar matters as a Superintendent of Police.

There are currently 35 districts in Assam. On 15 August 2015, the then Chief Minister of Assam Tarun Gogoi announced the formation of five new districts. On 26 January 2016, the then Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi announced two more districts, East Kamrup and South Kamrup respectively, although without adequate administrative infrastructure The Cabinet meeting on 7 October 2016 was temporarily adjourned.

Majuli became the first river island district in India on 27 June 2016, bringing the total number of districts in Assam to 33. On 8 August 2020, the Assam Cabinet passed a resolution to upgrade the Bajali sub-division of Barpeta district to a district The total number of districts in Assam is 34. On 23 January 2022, the Government of Assam declared Tamulpur as a district, bringing the total number of districts in Assam.
